Planning guide
Fly with your bike, or courier it?
Going away to ride or race? You can check your bike in on the flight or courier it ahead. Both work. Here is how to decide.
| Fly with it | Courier it | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Sports equipment fee, which depends on the airline and route | From R700 one way, shown before you pay |
| At the airport | You carry a large box to check-in and from the baggage hall | Hand luggage only |
| At your destination | You need a car big enough for the box | Delivered to your door |
| Timing | Travels with you | Collect 3 to 5 business days or more before you need it |
| Best for | Last-minute trips | Planned trips, events and holidays |
When flying with your bike makes sense
- You are booking late and there is no time for courier delivery.
- You will collect a hire car big enough for a bike box anyway.
- You want the bike with you at every step.
Check your airline’s rules for sports equipment before you book: fees, size and weight limits, and whether you need to add the bike in advance.
When couriering makes sense
- You know your dates and can book a week or more ahead.
- You do not want to carry a bike box through two airports.
- You are staying somewhere without easy transport for a big box.
- You want to fly home on a different day from the bike, or send it to a different address.
Mix and match. Some riders fly with the bike to an event and courier it home afterwards, so they can travel light when they are tired. Book a one-way delivery for just the return leg.
Whichever you choose, pack the bike the same way. See how to pack a bike for courier.
