How to send golf clubs by courier
Heading to a golf estate or a golf weekend? Send your clubs ahead and travel light. Here is how to pack them so they arrive in one piece.
Soft case or hard case?
Both work. A hard case gives the most protection and is best for expensive clubs. A padded soft travel cover is lighter and easier to store, but needs more care inside. A golf bag on its own, without a travel case, is not suitable for courier.
Step by step
- Remove the driver and fairway wood heads if they are adjustable, and pack them in the bag pocket wrapped in a towel or headcover.
- Fit headcovers on all woods and putters.
- Use a stiff arm or a broom handle. Put a support rod, slightly taller than your longest club, in the bag. If the case is dropped on its end, the rod takes the impact instead of your club heads.
- Wrap the irons together with a towel around the heads so they don’t knock against each other.
- Fill the gaps with towels or clothing so the clubs cannot move, then close the travel case.
- Attach the waybill to the outside of the case where it can be seen, and remove old airline tags.
Shoes and clothes? Add a kit bag (R350) to the same booking and send them separately, rather than overfilling the travel case.
Where to send them
You can send your clubs to your hotel, estate or a friend’s home. Check first that someone will receive and sign for them. Popular trips include the Garden Route, the Winelands, the KZN North Coast and the bushveld golf estates.
Before you book
- Choose a collection date that leaves at least 5 business days before your first round.
- Book the return leg at the same time, with a collection date after your last round.
- Add optional cover (R180) for valuable sets.
