E-bike guide
Sending an e-bike by courier
E-bikes are heavier than normal bikes and their batteries need special care. Here is what to know before you book.
The battery comes first
Lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods for transport, so couriers have rules about how they travel. Loose lithium batteries cannot be sent, and an e-bike battery may need our prior written approval and special handling.
Before you book, WhatsApp us the make and model of your e-bike and the battery rating in watt-hours (Wh), usually printed on the battery. We will tell you how the battery needs to travel.
Never send a damaged battery. If a battery is swollen, cracked, has been dropped hard, or is subject to a recall, do not send it. Speak to your bike shop.
Packing an e-bike
- Switch the system off and remove the display if it detaches. Pack it in your parts bag.
- Follow our battery instructions. We may ask you to send it partly charged, which is common for lithium battery transport.
- Use a strong box. E-bike boxes are bigger and heavier than normal bike boxes. Ask a bike shop for the box an e-bike was delivered in.
- Protect the motor area and the derailleur. The bike is heavy, so every contact point needs padding.
- Pack as for a normal bike following our bike packing guide: pedals off, bars turned, wheels padded and spaced.
- Weigh it if you can. Accurate weights help avoid extra charges later.

Several stage races now have e-bike categories, including Wines2Whales. Allow extra time for the battery approval when you plan your delivery.
